Carnelian is found in India, Uruguay, and Brazil. Carnelian can range from bright orange to reddish orange. The shades of red are due to iron oxide, and it is often placed in the sun to change brownish tints to red.

Carnelian is considered an alternate birthstone for July as well as an astrological birthstone and lucky charm for Virgo. Carnelian is not considered an anniversary gemstone.

History of Carnelian :
Romans believed Carnelian was a stone of courage that could shore up strength and confidence. Ancient Egyptians placed carnelian on mummies to assist them in their journey to the afterlife. It was also one of the stones inlaid in the mask of King Tutankhamen. Carnelian was once worn in cameos because it was believed to ward off depression and insanity. Napoleon I, Napoleon III, and Mohammed wore Carnelian. In the 1800's, people believed that Carnelian would help those who needed courage to speak. In the 1700's, people believed Carnelian would bring protection, comfort, and luck.
